Local Stories of Growth and Change:
Creating your own TOP FIGURES, MAPS, AND TABLES 

Growth and Change at the Rural-Urban Interface tells a story of statewide population growth and change. To create the story of population growth and land use change for particular Ohio counties and townships of interest, follow the instructions below.  Get the data and maps for your area of interest and compare it to the statewide figures, tables and maps from the report located on the side of each set of instructions. Some data manipulation is involved. Click here for an example (or download a PowerPoint version).

1.  1990 Population Growth. Go to the County and Township Data and Resource page.  Click-on your county.  Select "Section 1:  Township Level Population Characteristics & Trends (Data Tables)." Scroll to "Table 1.2 Township Change by Decade 1960 to 2000." Compare your county and/or township growth rate to Ohio's and the U.S. growth rate shown in the figure on the left.     A LOCAL EXAMPLE-Huron Co.

2. Township Population Growth Go to the County and Township Data and Resource page.  Click-on your county. Under Section 1, select "Figure 2: Township Population Change: Change in Number of Persons 1990 to 2000." Compare your township and city and village growth rates to the state using the figure on the right.    A LOCAL EXAMPLE-Hocking Co.

Go to the County and Township Data and Resource page.  Click-on your county. Under Section 1, select "Figure 1: Percentage County Population Located in Townships vs. Cities & Villages." Compare your township versus city growth rates to growth rates across the state (figure on your right).    A LOCAL EXAMPLE-Champaign Co.

3.  Pattern of Township Population Change. Go to the County and Township Data and Resource page.  Click-on your county. Under Maps, select map number 1.3. Use the map on the left to compare your township population change to the rest of Ohio.    A LOCAL EXAMPLE-Geauga Co.

4.  Population Density. Go to the County and Township Data and Resource page.  Click-on your county.  Select "Section 1:  Township Level Population Characteristics & Trends (Data Tables)." Scroll to "Table 1.3 Land Area & Population Density 1960 to 2000." To compare your community to others in the state, click-on the map on the right.    A LOCAL EXAMPLE-Darke Co.

 

5.  County Urban Land and Population Growth. Compare your county's urban land use and population growth with other counties in Ohio (Excel version or Adobe Acrobat version).  See how your county ranks.  Then compare your county to how the state ranks nationally: 7th fastest growing, 22nd in population growth.

 

6.  County Urban Land Consumption Index. The "urban land consumption index" is defined as the amount of urban land within an area for a given year, divided by the population of that area for the same year. If this index rises over a period of time, that would indicate that the county's population is utilizing more land per person.  Compare your county to others in Ohio.  Use the figure on the right to compare your county to the state overall.

7. Land Cover, early 1990s. Go to the County and Township Data and Resource page.  Click-on your county. Under Maps, select Map 2.2: County Land Use (early 1990's).  Use the map on the left to compare your township to the rest of Ohio.   A LOCAL EXAMPLE-Butler Co.

8. Land Use Change, 1982 to 1997. Go to the County and Township Data and Resource page.  Click-on your county. Under Section 2, select Figure 2: County Land Cover Change by Type: 1982 to 1997.  Use the figure on the right to compare your county to the state overall.  For a comparison of all Ohio counties, click here for a table.    A LOCAL EXAMPLE-Franklin Co.

For maps of land use change, go to the County and Township Data and Resource page.  Click-on your county. Under Maps, select maps numbered 2.3, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6.  Use the map on the left to compare your township to the rest of Ohio.
